Yarn or a Tale Spinning Fibers

 Laps are a mill end product (kind of hard to get lately!), which I sort for you so that you don't end up with any impossible lumps or tangles.  You'll receive clean fiber that can be in batt form, cloud form or short pieces of batts or top that can be easily split and predrafted into roving form for spinning as is or you can blend them with other fibers prior to spinning. One of my customers informed me that just one pass through the drum carder gives a  lovely result.  You'll find that they are a good bargain and a joy to spin with a little prep!

 I love spinning these just like they are into fabulous art yarns with lots of texture and character!  Yarns spun from the 50/50 merino/tussah silk laps have lovely drape and are wonderfully soft!  At their bargain price, you can afford to spin up some bulky, squishy merino/silk yarn ~ no need to consign it only to teeny lace-weight yardage (unless you want to!)  When dyed, the laps lose some of their loft and openness.  I hand tease them but they need to be treated more like a clean, washed fleece after dyeing than they do before they are dyed.  You may spin them as they are  like I do, but will probably not acheive a super fine or smooth yarn unless you drum card, hand card or comb them before spinning.  One pass in a drum carder or a couple of passes with hand cards or combs leaves you with an amazing fiber to work with :)  These are also excellent for needle felting and other art projects.

I do have laps in stock but at this time I will only fill orders for laps by request.  Over time I've taken losses on shipping when folks have ordered laps in volume because of the way the paypal shopping cart  is currently set up.  Laps take up a LOT of space in a box so it's more an issue of volume and box size/number of boxes required than it is of weight.  I can't adjust it at this time to accomodate the larger volume orders without somehow being unfair to 98% of my customers who order in smaller quantities and for whom my current shipping cost system was designed.  Laps are also more difficult to get than they used to be and my stock fluctuates so that it's difficult to keep accurate tallies on the site. 

If you're a regular retail customer, I apologize for this inconvenience.  Please email me and I'll be happy to send you an invoice for laps, whether you want 4 oz or a couple of pounds :)  Most of you that have been buying laps from me know me personally by now and I hope you'll bear with me.  If you wish to combine laps with other purchases from the site, please go ahead and place your order and include a note in the paypal comment box regarding laps.  I'll send you an additional invoice after checking stock for you :)

54's Natural White or Cobalt Blue Wool Laps :  Perfect for the dyer and absolutely lovely to spin! A medium grade wool that's a lot softer than I expected it to be...I would consider this soft enough for a sweater if the wearer isn't hyper-sensitive to wool. It's quite a bit softer than most of the romney or coopworth I've experienced.  I spun some up on a spindle without inserting a lot of twist and was really pleased with the resulting yarn here:  It has a nice bounce and a luster very similar to Border Leicester, without the coarse feeling of BL, of course!  I do recommend spinning this with a bit lower twist to maintain as much of the softeness as possible :)  A great bargain and an joy to spin!

HAZELNUT SUPERWASH MERINO LAMBSWOOL ~ Lots of variation in this fiber, which is wonderfully soft and perfect to spin for sock knitting or any garment you want to machine wash and dry.  The tones vary from a light brown through deep browns and dark greys in a very subtle way.
